TRADECENTRE '10

4:33 - That's a wrap for us. If anything breaks late, TSN will keep you up-to-date. Look for some further analysis once all of this soaks in over the next few days.

4:15 - Carolina trades C Stephane Yelle and RW Harrison Reed to Colorado for LW Cedric Lalonde-Mcnicoll and a sixth-round pick.

4:08 - With 26 trades and counting, this is officially the busiest trade deadline day ever.

4:04 - The aforementioned Oilers have just traded D Steve Staois to Calgary for D Aaron Johnson and a third-round draft pick. This is the first ever trade between these two teams.

3:52 - In terms of who lost today, I think the Edmonton Oilers have to take the cake in that classification. They weren't able to rid themselves of any of their struggling players, role players, or underperforming young players. All they did was downgrade on defence, and it's going to cost them more money.

3:45 - Brian Burke, for a second consecutive season, has provided us with the best quote of trade deadline day: "We're looking at forwards, we're looking at defencemen, we're looking at goalies... if they come up with a new position we'll be looking at that too."

3:38 - Brian Burke had some nice things to say about Alexi Ponikarovsky, regarding his on and off-ice persona. Good for him, as Poni has always been a dedicated contributor here in Toronto.

3:36 - Toronto acquires LW Chris Peluso from Pittsburgh for a sixth-round draft pick in 2011.

3:35 - Nashville acquired C Dustin Boyd from Calgary for a fourth-round draft pick.

3:30 - Edmonton has traded D Lubomir Visnovsky to ANH for Ryan Whitney. Pierre was right!
*Instant Analysis: An absolute steal for the Ducks and another troubling sign for Oilers fans. GM Steve Tambellini is really dropping the ball. He's given up on his two best defencemen in the last two days.

3:27 - Columbus trades D Mathieu Roy to Florida for Matt Rust.

3:24 - Way more movement in the East. Have the teams in that conference done what they needed to match up with the top teams in the West? Time will tell.

3:23 - Carolina has traded D Andrew Alberts to Vancouver for a third-round draft pick.

3:18 - Bryan Murray has a press conference scheduled for later in the hour, during which he will announce that his "team is awesome."

3:14 - Anaheim has acquired G Joey MacDonald from Toronto for a seventh-round pick in 2011.

3:13 - Darren Dreger is absolutely pounding on the keys of his BlackBerry.

3:11 - Here come the deals!

3:08 - Washington has acquired D Joe Corvo from Carolina for LW Oskar Osala, D Brian Pothier, and a second-round draft pick in 2011.

3:05 - Los Angeles has acquired LW Fredrik Modin from Columbus for future considerations.

2:55 - Dan Hamhuis of Nashville will not be traded. A good decision on David Poile's part I think. They can really shut people down when you look at their newly-formed top four.

2:52 - Lee Stempniak has been traded to Phoenix for fourth and seventh-round draft picks.

2:50 - Sheldon Souray is out for the season. Things are becoming more and more difficult for the Oilers to get things done.

2:49 - Deja vu. Columbus has traded D Milan Jurcina back to Washington for a sixth-round pick.

2:48 - BREAKING NEWS (via Bob McKenzie): Ray Whitney will not be traded. Oh really, Bob? Will it get dark at some point tonight too?

2:46 - Let's talk about belief for a second. Darren Pang believes Michael Leighton is the guy for Philly. Matthew Barnaby believes this is the year for San Jose. I believe that after two weeks, or in other words, one round of playoff hockey, the Flyers and Sharks can have a golf tournament together.

2:45 - How silly is the word "tweet?"

2:42 - Keith Jones and other people of his ilk who think Michael Leighton will win the Flyers some playoff games must be taking crazy pills.

2:35 - Buffalo has traded LW Clarke MaCarthur to Atlanta for a third and a fourth-round pick.

2:27 - Other bloggers are reporting that if Kaberle works something out, it will involve Washington, Boston, or Philadelphia.

2:22 - If Atlanta can move Colby Armstrong, they should. He's lost his way down south and could help a team looking for a grinding winger with a slight scoring touch.

2:19 - Columbus has traded LW Raffi Torres to Buffalo for D Nathan Paetsch and a second-round draft pick.
*Instant Analysis: It's nice to see Darcy Regier working on trade deadline day, but this won't be enough to propel Buffalo past the other top teams in the East.

2:17 - Whatever your goal, chocolate milk will help you get there.

2:16 - If Washington makes a play for Tomas Kaberle, Toronto will likely ask for Eric Fehr and Karl Alzner.

2:01 - Calgary has traded G Curtis McElhinney to Anaheim for G Vesa Toskala.
*Instant Analysis: As the last Toskala fan left in the GTA, I think this is an important upgrade for Calgary. It won't change their ultimate fate though.

2:00 Entering the final hour, and we've hit the expected lull (keep in mind trades come through until well after 4p.m.). Luckily this pizza is keeping us busy.

1:49: Here's a look at the Capitals' lines before today's trades. I'm not sure why they have chosen to mess with a great thing - they lead the league in goals for.

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Fleischmann-Laich-Semin
Gordon-Steckel-Bradley
Chimera-Morrison-Fehr

Where do Belanger and Walker fit in?!

1:46 - Minnesota trades C Eric Belanger to Washington for a second-round draft pick.
*Instant Analysis: Unless George McPhee is going to flip some of these extra forwards for a defenceman then the Capitals will be huge losers today. Their may be some chemistry disruption. They had four lines getting familiar with each other and going really well. That's in jeopardy now.

1:39 - We've been looking into the Radek Dvorak situation, and while we believe Detroit won't do much, he might be someone of interest to them since Kirk Maltby is out for the season. They have similar attributes and playoff histories, apart from the cups.

1:38 - We're still waiting for the ball to drop in Philly. There's no way they go through the day without acquiring a goaltender.

1:30 - Tampa Bay trades C Jeff Halpern to LA for a third-round draft pick and RW Ted Purcell.
*Instant Analysis: Unless Halpern can be effective on the wing, this is not a move to get excited about. He's not skilled enough at this point in his career to be significant in their top nine forwards. Perhaps his penalty killing prowess will help.

1:26 - In case you were wondering, last year there were more than twelve trades made between 1:30pm and 3:00pm.

1:20 - The Phoenix Coyotes have acquired D Mathieu Schneider from Vancouver.

1:18 - The texts are flying in here. Deals to report soon.

1:16 - Word of the day: "Ilk."

1:14 - James Duthie asked Craig McTavish what, apart from a lack of talent, is wrong with the Oilers. The answer is nothing. From this point forward James Duthie will be referred to as Captain Obvious.

1:12 - As usual, Jaromir Jagr became a subject of conversation. He wants to come back to the NHL next season and can be effective. He also wants to play in Canada. This won't be resolved today, but it's interesting to think about. I wouldn't be surprised if went back to Pittsburgh to play with once-rival Sidney Crosby.

1:07 - Anyone else wondering why Sam Gagner is apparently untouchable?

12:55 - Detroit trades C Kris Newbury to the New York Rangers for LW Jordan Owens.

12:54 - If Michael Nylander is the Swedish Wayne Gretzky, what is he still doing in the minors? Someone give him a chance, please!

12:53 - Don't worry Leaf fans, apparently Luca Caputi will be in the line-up against Boston.

12:45 - Dallas has been quiet. Everyone is wondering whether they'll move Marty Turco. We're not sure how healthy Kari Lehtonen, which makes it tough to take a stand on this one. Perhaps Stars' management isn't sure either.

12:42 - Colorado has, to my surprise, traded LW Wojtek Wolski to Phoenix for C Peter Mueller and LW Kevin Porter.
*Instant Analysis: With his pending RFA status in mind, Colorado moves the better player. This will hurt them in the short-term. Mueller may pan out, but time will tell. Phoenix needed offensive help to compliment their solid team defence moving into the playoffs - they got it.

12:37 - Lots of talk surrounding Peter Mueller.

12:34 - St. Louis has traded C Yan Stastny to Vancouver for Pierre-Cedric Lebrie.

12:31 - The pizza is on the way. Four mediums, two toppings on each, $20.99. Thank you Piero.

12:25 - The Washington Capitals have acquired Scott Walker from Carolina for a seventh-round pick.
*Instant Analysis: Not necessary for Washington. They have 12 forwards in place, meaning Walker will need someone to get hurt to get into their line-up.

12:21 - As I first reported last night, Darren Dreger is suggesting Ray Whitney will not be traded.

12:19 - The panel is reminding us that Matt Stajan is a big upgrade on Craig Conroy. They're right, but hey, who isn't?

12:09 - We've had more trades go through so far today than we had after this much time had passed last year. Look for the afternoon to become increasingly busy.

12:07 - We know the Flames are looking to improve their back-up goaltending. Josh Harding is a name that has come up.

12:06 - Edmonton has claimed RW Ryan Jones off waivers from Nashville.

12:05 - Another reason not to watch The Score: They can't even spell the players' names right. Who on earth is THOMAS Vokoun?

12:01 - I presume having already acquired five forwards before the Olympics that Calgary won't be very active today. Based on who those forwards are, I also presume they won't be able to get into the playoffs.

11:56 - I should've known better. It wasn't a Subway commercial. It was Quizno's. And seriously, who couldn't go for a Prime Rib sub right now? Toasted tastes better indeed. Evidently, toasted advertises better too.

11:48 - Look into Pierre's eyes... Ryan Whitney will be traded.

11:45 - The Anaheim Ducks have acquired D Aaron Ward from Carolina for G Justin Pogge and a fourth-round draft pick.
*Instant Analysis: I knew Aaron Ward would be traded, I'm surprised by the destination though. I guess Anaheim is going to try and make a late push like they did last year and claim that eighth spot in the West.

11:39 - If I were the LA Kings, I would look into acquiring Radek Dvorak from Florida to play alongside Michal Handzus.

11:35 - The Boston Bruins were quick to upgrade on Derek Morris. They've acquired D Dennis Seidenberg and defensive prospect Matt Bartkowski from Florida for RW Craig Weller, RW Byron Bitz and a second-round draft pick.

11:32 - Congratulations to Subway for finally making a decent commercial. The value versus quality sketch characters, Albanian accents in hand, are terrific.

11:29 - I think it's unlikely Atlanta moves Afinogenov or Kubina. It's crucial that they make the playoffs this year, and those guys are correlated to any success they'll have.

11:27 - Nashville has placed RW Ryan Jones on waivers.

11:23 - Detroit GM Ken Holland has explained that he will not be very active today.

11:16 - The Buffalo Sabres need to get in the mix if they want to have a chance of success in the playoffs.

11:13 - Nick Kypreos is reporting that the Rangers are interested in Raffi Torres. We can't be sure how reliable this rumor is, given that one of his primary sources would be the Rangers bus driver.

11:11 - While for some time it seemed like today would be the day Montreal moved a goalie, it looks like Halak and Price are staying put, at least until the summer. At least five other goalies are in play though.

11:07 - *Instant Analysis: New Jersey has addressed a need by acquiring Martin Skoula. He's a disciplined defenceman who is very familiar and works well with Devils' head coach Jacques Lemaire. With their injuries this was hugely important. He can shut people down and play the second-unit power play if need be.

11:05 - The Colorado Avalanche have signed G John Grahame. Remember him?

10:59 - As expected, the Leafs have traded Martin Skoula. He goes to New Jersey.

10:57 - Early candidate for quote of the day, courtesy Michael Farber: "You can't spell Demitra without I-R." Thanks Mike.

10:56 - It looks like Dan Hamhuis is going to be the focal point for the day.

10:54 - The TSN panel is floating the idea that Vancouver might want to move the ultra-hot Pavol Demitra. Not a smart move in my opinion. They would need to turn around and address depth scoring if traded him for a defenceman. I know they have injuries on the back end, but getting rid of your biggest offensive weapon after the Sedins would not be very astute.

10:43 - Sidney Crosby, in an interview with TSN, seems positive about the Ponikarovsky transaction.

10:39 - Boston has received a fourth-round pick in return for Morris.

10:31 - I'll be right back with a full report on the trade between Phoenix and Boston. The rest of my TradeCentre panel is here and are getting settled.

10:26 - Derek Morris has been traded on deadline day again. This time going back to Phoenix.

10:24 - I'm really curious to see what the Lightning do today. They have some great pieces and are in the playoff hunt right now.

10:23 - Don't forget to vote in the polls down the right hand side of the blog.

10:19 - Regarding the previous post, it may that be Marek Svatos is on his way to Boston. Just a hunch, but there's some sense to it I think.

10:13 - Rumblings suggest Boston GM Peter Chiarelli is working hard at getting more than one deal done as soon as possible.

10:12 - In case you were wondering, Peca picked Jordan Eberle, otherwise known in the TSN community as "The Messiah." Sigh-a...

10:09 - Mike Peca has put together a list of players he thinks will make Canada's 2014 Olympic Team. In the words of the great Seth Myers, really Mike? I mean, really?

10:02 - The panel just realized the Senators are better without Dany Heatley than they were with him. Funny how I, and other fans, had that figured out a long time ago. A long time ago being about two weeks after he first got to our nation's capital.

10:00 - For Joe C., I have a little bit more information on new Habs prospect Aaron Palushaj. He's only 20 years of age, and was an offensive superstar in the USHL. Having some friends in that league, I can tell you it's pretty competitive. Since his time there, he spent two years in the NCAA (where he was moderately effective offensively, but my sources out of Maine say his all-around game is decent) and is now in his first full season at the AHL level. His numbers aren't overwhelming, but again, he's a young guy, and I think D'Agostini had stalled a bit in his development.

9:54 - Looking over the Senators roster, I really believe if my good friend Brian Elliott can keep up his stellar play, the Senators can win a couple of playoff rounds.

9:52 - I'd like to thank Dr. Bradley Miller for canceling my Administrative Law class today. He didn't provide a reason, but we all know he's at home watching TSN's TradeCentre and making Cappuccinos.

9:51 - Tomas Kaberle doesn't seem to be interested in lifting his no-trade clause. That hasn't stopped the analysts from conjuring up possible trades involving him. If I were Brian Burke, there's no way I would trade this guy - not even when his no-trade clause is void between July 1st and August 15th. He's the best player on the team, makes an extremely reasonable $4.25 million per year, and wants to play in Toronto. You can't ask for more. Surround him with better people and get him signed to a new extension.

9:45 - Any team with a solidified playoff position would be well-served to claim Enver Lisin. He's hands-down the fastest skater in the league and has a wicked shot. He could make the same kind of impact Oleg Saprykin did in Ottawa when they acquired him at the deadline in '07 on their way to the Final.

9:44 - Montreal is working on addressing their weaknesses amongst their bottom six forwards.

9:41 - It does appear more and more likely D Dan Hamhuis will be traded if Nashville can get a draft pick and a young player in return.

9:40 - Bob McKenzie is suggesting Wojtek Wolski is on the trade block. He is incorrect.

9:38 - Who's excited to see "Brooklyn's Finest" this Friday?

9:36 - The Detroit Red Wings have placed C Ryan Oulahan on waivers.

9:35 - The New York Rangers have placed LW Aaron Voros and RW Enver Lisin on waivers (again).

9:32 - Good for Dave Hodge for being the voice of reason. Everyone is getting all excited about the Leafs shedding themselves of several players, but he seems to be the only one recognizing the fact that there are still games to be played and there's almost no one left to put pucks in the net for them.

9:30 - It appears to me that something is going on in San Jose. Another small acquisition is pending.

9:29 - No news on the Leafs' front.

9:11 - People seem to be selling the notion that by winning Olympic Gold, the San Jose forward threesome has shed their reputation of being busts in the playoffs. Forgive me for saying, but it will never be "the year" for the Sharks as long as they're relying on guys like Thornton, Marleau, Heatley, and Nabokov.

9:09 - The consensus pick for the Stanley Cup favorite is Chicago. Matthew Barnaby thinks "this IS the year" for San Jose. Good luck to you in your playoff pool, Matt.

9:05 - The TSN panel is making their early Stanley Cup predictions. It will be interesting to see how their opinions change as players change teams throughout the day.

9:03 - Good morning, I hope everyone is excited for what is truly one of the year's premium days. It's right up there with Boxing Day and the last day of school. I'm in the process of making some breakfast and some coffee and will be informing you of all the trades as they come (though they usually don't start to come until around noon). In the meantime, check out my last few blog entries, which serve as a TradeCentre primer.
